Matt McGlasson, DVM, CVPM: I think the important thing with pet insurance, when you have that conversation with clients, is to keep your recommendations really simple. So, we don't have tons of time to have a really long drawn out conversation with clients. We're really limited in the time we have. So pick 2 insurance companies that you really trust and have their brochures ready in the exam room. And the best time to talk with clients about that is that the first puppy visit. So we like to talk with clients [asking], "Do you have any idea what it would look like if your dog had to have exploratory surgery at the emergency clinic on a weekend? That could be 5...6...7 [hundred]...$1,000? Are you prepared for that?" So pet insurance is just a tool for clients to get the care that they want for their pet.
