Experts will detail combining integrative with traditional medicine to benefit geriatric patients and those with cancer

The North American Veterinary Community will host its "Level Up: Integrative Medicine" virtual summit on April 19, 2022, and April 21, 2022. Veterinary experts will cover acupuncture for geriatric patients, cancer treatments that begin with herbs and nutrition, and alternative treatments for common neurologic conditions.

"As many people are open to integrative medicine to treat illness in humans, the same approaches are now being applied to help our pets live longer and enjoy a better quality of life," said Dana Varble, DVM, CAE, NAVC Chief Veterinary Officer, in an organizational release.1

"The Level Up virtual summits are another example of how the NAVC is opening the door for veterinary professionals everywhere to learn about advances in animal healthcare that can be used immediately in their practices,” she added.

Acupuncture provides an alternative treatment for geriatric patients when traditional treatments may be challenging. During the session "Integrative Approach to Geriatric Patients," Huisheng Xie, BSvm, MS, PhD, professor of the Chi University, and Emeritus Professor at the University of Florida and the China Agricultural University, will explain how acupuncture can relieve pain and illnesses as well as extend and improve quality of life.

Additionally, attendees will gain insight into integrative treatments for common neurologic conditions observed in general veterinary practice.1 Deanne Zenoni, DVM, CVSMT, CVMRT, CVA, an associate veterinarian at Tops Veterinary Rehabilitation and Chicago Exotics Animal Hospital and instructor at the Healing Oasis, will describe how exercise and hydrotherapy can treat patients with degenerative myelopathy.

Last, summit attendees will discover how herbal medicine and diet can benefit pets with cancer. Nicole Sheehan, DVM, CVA, CVCH, CVFT, MATP, owner of Whole Pet Animal Hospitals, will lead a 2-part lecture outlining how herbs and nutrition are used, along with conventional treatments, to enhance quality of life, maximize survival times, and offer at-home care tips.1

According to the release,1 "Level Up" is a new series of virtual events created by the NAVC and hosted on VetFolio. Registrants can obtain up to 4 hours of continuing education.
