RECALL: 2 More Companies Recall Raw Pet Foods

March 6, 2018
Kerry Lengyel

Two additional companies have issued recalls of raw pet food products due to potential contamination with Salmonella and Listeria.

Two more raw pet food recalls have been issued, following the slew of recalls last month regarding various issues with raw pet food.

Blue Ridge Beef, a pet food manufacturer based in Eatonton, Georgia, has recalled one lot of its frozen Kitten Grind raw pet food after several consumer complaints, including the deaths of 2 kittens—one death from Salmonella septicemia.

Once the FDA received word of the 2 deaths, they performed testing of the specific raw pet food, finding traces of both Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes.

The recalled lot includes 20 cases—300 chubs—distributed to Texas, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, and North Carolina. These recalled cases have the following attributes:

  • 2 lb frozen chubs
  • Lot Number: GA1102

  • Manufacturing Date: 11/02/2017

Pet owners who have handled the affected products are considered to be at risk for Salmonella infection and should seek medical help if they develop symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, watery or bloody diarrhea, fever, or headache. Similarly, veterinary care should be sought for pets that show any of these signs. All contaminated materials should be washed thoroughly.

Listeria can cause listeriosis in dogs, the clinical signs of which may include diarrhea, vomiting, fever, muscular and respiratory signs, abortion, and even death. Humans infected with Listeria can have symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, aches, and fever, as well as more serious ailments including arterial infections, endocarditis, and even death.

Those that have purchased the recalled product should return them to their place of purchase for a full refund. For further questions, consumers can call contact Blue Ridge Beef at blueridgebeefga@yahoo.com.

In a separate alert, Steve’s Real Food, a pet food manufacturer based in Salt Lake City, Utah, has voluntarily recalled 1 lot of its 5 lb Raw Frozen Dog Food Turkey Canine Recipe due to potential Salmonella contamination.

Fifty-two cases of the recalled frozen turkey nuggets were distributed between June 27 and July 15 to retail pet food stores in several states, including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Iowa, Kansas, Florida, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington.

The recalled products have the following attributes:

  • Lot Number: E 178
  • UPC Code: 6-91730-15303-8
  • Best By Date: 09/27/18

No pet or human illnesses due to this recalled product have been reported to date. Consumers are urged to return any of the recalled product to the place of purchase for a full refund. For further questions, consumers can contact Steve’s Real Food at 888-526-1900.
