The FDA has officially approved generic Maropitant Citrate tablets for canines to prevent acute vomiting and vomiting due to motion sickness. Maropitant Citrate, sponsored by ZyVet Animal Health Inc, in Pennington, New Jersey, is an antiemetic drug containing the same active ingredient (maropitant citrate) in the same concentration and dosage form as the approved brand name drug product, Cerenia tablets, that received FDA approval on January 29, 2007. The FDA also determined the tablets contain no inactive ingredients that could slightly affect the bioavailability of the active ingredient.

The labeling on the product states that those who handle, administer, or are exposed to Maropitant Citrate can have an allergic reaction if the product gets on their skin. Anyone administering the product should wash their hands with soap and water after giving the drug. The FDA warned the drug may also cause eye irritation and if the product accidentally gets in their eye, they should flush their eye out for 15 minutes and seek medical attention.

Maropitant Citrate comes in 16, 24, 60, or 160 mg of Maropitant as Maropitant Citrate per table with each tablet strength scored and packaged in blister packs that contain 4 tablets per perforated sheet.1
