Virginia Techs Dr. Nathaniel A. White honored by AAEP

The Distinguished Life Member Award, bestowed by the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) on a member who has made outstanding contributions to the association throughout his career, was given to Nathaniel A. White II, DVM, professor emeritus of equine surgery at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine's Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center. White was honored in January at the AAEP's annual convention in Las Vegas.

Among the long list of accomplishments and professional leadership positions, White served as AAEP president in 2010 and is currently chair of the AAEP's National Equine Health Plan Task Force, which is establishing an Equine Disease Communication Center to serve as a national hub for equine disease reporting and communication. The AAEP also notes in a release that White was instrumental in the establishment and served as long-time chair of the AAEP Foundation, the charitable arm of the association. He also served two terms on the AAEP board of directors, volunteered extensively with the AAEP On Call program and received the AAEP's Distinguished Service Award in 2004.

White is a world-renowned expert on colic and has authored several books on the topic as well as surgical texts. He received his doctor of veterinary medicine degree from Cornell University before completing an internship and residency in surgery at the University of California, Davis. He then went on to earn a master's degree in pathology at Kansas State University. White is also a former president and Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons.
