The book was written by the director of the Kauai Humane Society, Rebecca Rhoades, DVM.While the book discusses various methods for euthanasia, it focuses primarily on the use of sodium pentobarbital, which is the most humane method available for animal shelters and is recommended by the American Veterinary Medical Association, HSUS, the American Humane Association and the National Animal Control Association.Legal requirements, sources for sodium pentobarbital, setting up a euthanasia area, physical restraint and disposal of bodies are some of the other topics discussed.While the book focuses primarily on euthanizing dogs and cats, it also includes information on proper techniques to use with small mammals such as ferrets, hamsters, amphibians, reptiles, birds, farm animals and wildlife, such as raccoons and skunks.
