Purina releases FortiFlora diarrhea kit for dogs and cats

Nestlé Purina PetCare has launched a two-step over-the-counter FortiFlora kit pairing a kaolin-and-pectin binder with a daily probiotic to manage occasional diarrhea in dogs and cats.

Nestlé Purina PetCare has launched the FortiFlora Diarrhea Response Kit, a two-step over-the-counter system the company says helps manage occasional diarrhea in dogs and cats, according to a company announcement.1

The system pairs FortiFlora Response stick packs, a liver-flavored powder containing kaolin and pectin that the company says helps firm loose stools and soothe the gastrointestinal tract, with FortiFlora sachets, a probiotic formulated with the single strain Enterococcus lactis SF68 for daily use. Under the labeled protocol, a stick pack is administered every eight hours for up to 72 hours, after which owners switch to daily sachets. Purina recommends continued daily use after the kit is finished.

Purina describes FortiFlora as the top veterinarian-recommended probiotic brand for digestive health, citing a Q4 2025 online survey of US veterinarians who named the brand among 1 to 3 brands they recommended.

"No one wants their pet to be uncomfortable, and diarrhea can be stressful for pets and owners," said Martha Cline, DVM, DACVIM, a Purina veterinary nutritionist, in the announcement.1 "The FortiFlora Diarrhea Response Kit gives pet owners a clear, two-step plan, rooted in the same probiotic veterinarians have trusted for 20 years."

Currently, Nutramax Laboratories Veterinary Sciences markets a comparable two-part product, the Proviable Diarrhea Support Kit. It includes a 15 mL syringe of kaolin-and-pectin paste, administered by mouth to firm loose stool and coat the GI tract, alongside capsules of probiotic powder sprinkled over food to help reestablish intestinal balance.2 However, FortiFlora uses a single strain, while Nutramax says its Proviable capsules deliver multiple strains of bacteria at 5 billion colony-forming units, along with prebiotics intended to encourage growth of those strains in the gut. The small-dog-and-cat kit pairs the paste with 10 capsules.

Cline, in the Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Supplements announcement, said owners should consult a veterinarian if diarrhea persists beyond 3 days, worsens, or is accompanied by vomiting or changes in appetite or energy. She recommended noting the frequency of the diarrhea and the presence of blood, mucus, or straining, pointing to the Purina Pro Plan Fecal Scoring Chart as a reference, and advised a fecal examination to rule out parasites, which are a common cause of diarrhea in dogs.

The FortiFlora kit is sized by weight class, each containing a corresponding number of stick packs plus five sachets. Suggested retail pricing is $34.99 for cats and small dogs, $38.99 for medium dogs, and $42.99 for large dogs. It is available on Amazon, Chewy, and VetDirect.com, or through veterinarians.

Both companies market their probiotics as holding the top spot in veterinarian-recommended surveys, Purina among probiotic brands and Nutramax among supplement companies, though the two claims rest on separate surveys and methodologies.
