Novartis announces the purchase of Denagard® (tiamulin), a broad-spectrum swine antibiotic for control and treatment of certain swine bacterial diseases.

The company announced an agreement with Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica Inc. that enabled Novartis to acquire the Denagard brand franchise.

The acquisition represents a step in the company's efforts to strengthen its position in the livestock industry, the company says.

Denagard treats enteric and respiratory diseases. Denagard Medicated Premix is labeled for control of ileitis associated with Lawsonia intracellularis, and the treatment and control of swine dysentery associated with Brachyspira (Serpulina) hyodysenteriae.

The liquid concentrate form is for the treatment of swine dysentery associated with Brachyspira (Serpulina) hyodysenteriae and swine pneumonia due to Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae.
