DULUTH, GA. — Merial reports that its 1,000-dog Previcox® (firocoxib) osteoarthritis trial in more than 100 veterinary hospitals adequately demonstrates the drug's efficacy and safety.

The trial evaluated lameness, activity level and the attitude of the dogs after 40 days of using the drug.

The results demonstrate that more than 90 percent of dogs showed improvement, with more than 75 percent showing dramatic improvement, the company says.

Dogs were enrolled in the study after veterinarians reviewed the results of laboratory testing of blood samples and deemed the dogs qualified.

Efficacy findings from the study include:

  • Veterinarians rated 93 percent of dogs and owners rated 91 percent of dogs as improved.

  • Veterinarians and owners observed consistent improvement in overall lameness.

  • Owners reported improvement in more than 87 percent of dogs that were treated with NSAIDs in the week prior to treatment with Previcox.

  • Eighty-six percent of owners rated their dogs more active or happier after treatment with firocoxib.

About 90 percent of owners found Previcox convenient to administer and 79 percent reported firocoxib more palatable to their dogs, the company says.

The product is available in a once-a-day dose that provides pain relief for 24-hours.
