-- Pets with cancer whose owners can’t afford treatment can get financial help from a newly established philanthropic fund, based on veterinarian referrals.
Dr. Agnes Varis, a client of NYC Veterinary Specialists whose cat Zeus lived five months after being diagnosed with lymphoma earlier this year, created the hardship fund, called Zeus Varis Fund, through Frankie’s Friends Charitable Pet Foundation, the charitable arm of BluePearl Veterinary Partners, NYCVS' parent company.
"The goal for the pets that receive assistance is to give them the treatment as soon as possible, so they may remain at home, comfortable and with a good quality of life as long as possible," says Bonita Voiland, executive director of the foundation.
Vargis launched Agvar Chemicals in 1970 and co-founded Marsam Pharmaceuticals in 1985. She became the founder and president of Aegis Pharmaceuticals in 1992.
To qualify for financial help, clients in the New York City area must be referred by a veterinarian to NYCVS and demonstrate significant need. They may not apply directly. DVMs may call Dr. Tim Rocha or Dr. Karen Oberthaler at NYCVS at (212) 767-0099 to discuss potential cases.
Tax-deductible donations to the fund are accepted at NYCVS locations or online at www.frankiesfriends.com
