New Cornell course explores canine genomics

The 6-week online class will be interactive with lecture material, live office hours, discussions, and problem sets that use different genetic databases.

A “cutting-edge” online course that combines the fields of genetics, data science, and research is being launched in summer 2026 by Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. The Genomic Data Science in Dogs course is a 6-week, 3-credit program, running from June 22-July 31, 2026.1

Designed for undergraduates, precollege students, and anyone passionate about genomics, this course offers learners the opportunity to analyze real genomic datasets from world-class canine research and explore the ethical implications of genetic testing, according to a news release from Cornell. Students will have opportunities to discover the secrets of the canine genome while gaining essential skills in data analysis. As an added feature, students have the option to perform commercial genetic testing on their own pet dog, enhancing the practical application of their learning.1

The course is 100% online and provides flexible, asynchronous lectures alongside live discussions and interactive problem sets. Topics covered include foundational genomics, accessing and interpreting genetic data, and the future of genetic testing for both animals and humans.1

"This course bridges the gap between biology and data science, offering students the unique opportunity to work with real-world genomic datasets, uncover insights, and build a skill set applicable to any species," Adam Boyko, MS, PhD, and associate professor for the department of biomedical and translational sciences at Cornell University, said in the release.1

The course provides an introduction to genomic data science using real datasets from “cutting edge” dog genetic research, according to the Cornell’s course description. “Students will learn key background concepts for understanding genomics, develop key skills for accessing and evaluating genomic data, and discuss future opportunities and ethical concerns regarding dog and human genetic testing,” Cornell states on its website.2

This intensive, interactive course is comprised of asynchronous lecture material, live office hours, online discussion, and problem sets that use different genetic databases. Students will also have the opportunity to perform commercial genetic testing on their own pet dog to enhance their learning through practical application, according to Cornell.1,2
