Nutrients for Musculoskeletal Health: Repairing in Rehab

  • Topic: Rehabilitation
  • Speaker: Laura Gaylord, DVM, DACVIM (Nutrition)
  • Sponsor: Standard Process Veterinary Formulas
  • CE Credit: 1.0

Physical rehabilitation is a powerful modality that can improve patient care and well-being. Nutrition plays a key role in physical rehabilitation by providing the building blocks for the body’s musculoskeletal system. Nutrients are critical in surgical recovery/wound healing, physical performance enhancement, weight management, and improved conditioning/geriatric care for patients. Nutritional assessments should be performed for every rehabilitation patient because malnutrition is a significant limitation on the success of physical rehabilitation. Nutrients essential for rehabilitation include macronutrients (protein, fats, carbohydrates) and micronutrients (vitamins, minerals). A supplement plan can also be optimized to support body tissues/organs during a rehabilitation program. Select nutrients will be discussed, including ω-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, glucosamine/chondroitin, anti-inflammatory herbs (Boswellia and turmeric), and phytocannabinoids. Lastly, nutrients that can support the body during times of stress and recovery are discussed. Cases will be presented to highlight the management of nutrition and supplements during physical rehabilitation.
