Equine herpes virus case spurs Virgina quarantines

RICHMOND, VA.— State veterinary officials quarantined six farms in northern Virginia that could have come in contact with a horse infected with equine herpes virus-1 (EHV-1).

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services reports the infected horse was treated at Leesburg's Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center, which also was under quarantine.

EHV-1 is highly infectious and typically affects the respiratory system of infected horses. The virus may also cause neurologic disease.
