In celebration of National Puppy Day on March 23, 2022, Camp Bow Wow has released its 2022 Top 10 Dog Names. The top names come from Camp Bow Bows' record of approximately 400,000 campers within the United States and Canada.

According to a company release, this is the list1:

  1. Luna
  2. Bella
  3. Charlie
  4. Cooper
  5. Lucy
  6. Max
  7. Daisy
  8. Bailey
  9. Milo
  10. Sadie

After a close battle for number one, Luna beat Bella as the most popular name for the year. Milo made its debut on this list this year, surpassing previous top 10 name Buddy.1

Erin Askeland, MSc, CPDT-KA, CBCC-KA, Camp Bow Wow animal health and behavioral expert, explained that names ending in vowels enable dogs to distinguish their name from others because vowels change the vocal tone. Because dogs are attuned to this, it also makes names ending with a harder sound easier for them to distinguish from other words.

"Your dog's name will be used for training purposes, so it's important to choose carefully," shared Askeland.1

"Short, two-syllable names are helpful for getting your dog's attention, while names that sound like commonly used words or cues could confuse your pup. For example, 'Shay' is cute, but it may sound like 'stay' to a dog."

According to Chewy,2 Americans adopted approximately 1 million dogs in 2021. Typically, shelter dogs are already named, but Askeland noted that it's OK to change it. If you do, make sure you select something you like and stick with it.

"Be sure to give lots of love and positive reinforcement when using the new name, and your pup will adjust just fine," she said.1

Since its initiation in 2000, Camp Bow Wow has had about 40 million dog visits, and it has witnessed trends in the names throughout the years.
