Schaumburg, Ill.

-- Jim Flanigan, director of marketing with AVMA for the past seven years, has left the association for the Society of Critical Care Medicine, a human health organization.

Flanigan began his new post March 23.

"I've been at the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) for seven years and it seemed like a time when things were stable to leave," Flanigan says. "Dr. DeHaven is here and he is an incredible leader. I have a lot of confidence that the work I and my colleagues have put in to AVMA during that time will be well cared for."

Flanigan's move is an opportunity for him to take on more responsibility, he says. His new duties will include SECMs, marketing, communications, membership and industry relations.

"I'm doing this for selfish reasons," he says. "This is an opportunity for me to grow as an association professional. I've loved every single moment with the AVMA. Working with the membership, I can honestly say they are the most caring, appreciative group I've ever worked for."

Prior to taking over the then newly formed AVMA Communications Division, Flanigan worked as director of marketing and communications for Women in Cable & Telecommunications. He also held the positions of director of communications for the Illinois Pharmacists Association and public relations director for the Variety Club Children's Charities.

"The fundamentals are the same no matter where you go," Flanigan attests. "The challenges are different. The pace is different. That's what refreshes you and keeps it interesting."
