Vermont considers law on sow confinement

MONTPELIER, VT. — Vermont is the latest state to consider new rules for the confinement of sows.

Senate Bill 239 was introduced Jan. 3 and would prohibit the confinement of sows during gestation. If passed, the bill would require gestating sows be confined in a manner to allow them to turn around freely, lie down, stand up or fully extend their limbs.

The bill also contains language ensuring humane slaughter. The legislation was referred to the Committee on Agriculture on Jan. 3.
