The Most Expensive Housing Market in Your State

With a median house price of more than $1 million, San Francisco tops the list of the most expensive housing markets in the United States. Here are the other chart-topping counties for each state.

While some real estate forecasters predict another housing bubble burst that could cause drastic dips in property values reminiscent of 2005, the housing market has been steadily growing. According to the National Association of Realtors, the median existing-home price for all housing types in February was $241,700, up 5.9 percent from February 2017 — making this the 72nd straight month of year-over-year gains.

But how do these nationwide trends affect your state?

Earlier this month, 24/7 Wall Street released a list of the most expensive housing markets for all 50 states. While some of the “most expensive” areas are relatively affordable compared to the city’s median household income, others are far above what most Americans could afford.

Some of the most expensive markets can be found in coastal states, including New York, Massachusetts, Virginia and California. Multiple cities in California — think San Diego and Los Angeles — top the most expensive metropolitans in the United States and far outpace real estate markets in even the most expensive areas of the majority of states. The median home prices in the most expensive markets in Arkansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma, for example, barely top $200,000.

San Francisco takes the top spot in the country with a median house price of $1.08 million. According to a Kiplinger analysis of the most expensive cities in the country — which says the median home price in San Francisco is $858,800 — the cost of living in the Bay Area is almost 93 percent above the average cost of living in the United States.
