Over the past 10 years equine over-conditioning and obesity have emerged as a major problem. Recent reports indicated that up to 50% of horses may be affected in Europe and North America. Obesity can subsequently lead to an array of secondary problems, amongst them laminitis and other orthopaedic conditions. Every equine practitioner is aware of the challenge that the work-up of an obese horse or pony represents. Such investigations are aimed at differentiating between ‘simple' over-feeding, Metabolic Syndrome and Cushings Disease (Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction). This practically-oriented course is intended to help vets from mixed or equine practice to learn how to differentiate between the above conditions, based on clinical presentation, blood work and other diagnostic aids. Recent publications have shed new light on which blood tests are most reliable and how the generated results should be interpreted. New developments in therapy of Equine Metabolic Syndrome, Cushings and obesity containing practical pointers will also be discussed in detail with the panel of experts. Foot assessment and farriery options for the laminitic foot will furthermore be covered and trained on foot specimens and live horses.
