Pick your new title

Article

Let's say you could forget "receptionist" or "technician" and pick any title you wanted-something that really reflects your skills and goals. So you could be "chatty chief greeter in charge of great visits" or "superwoman for sensational care." Would you think about your job differently? What title would you choose for yourself?

When you love your job, your enthusiasm shows. You arrive motivated and plow through a bunch of work. In my experience, "happy at work" normally translates into "productive and efficient."

I'm really lucky; the people I work with show up every day with can-do, let's-go, we-can-get-even-better attitudes. Their great work helps keep me excited. We regularly set and tackle new goals so we can make stronger, more engaging magazines.

So, I think finding ways to stay excited about your job is a key piece of the success puzzle. And figuring out what you contribute, how to get better, and what makes you feel great about your work helps keep you excited. (For more, see "Love Your Job Again")

A funny thing happens here when people shine at work. Somehow, we find more and more challenging things for them to do. And that's just what happened to Portia Stewart.

You've been reaping the benefits of Portia's work since Firstline launched last year. As Firstline's managing editor, she's been our grand-pumba of great source finding, our chief catchy headline writer, our head "here's a great idea" honcho, and our "pleased to fix up this problem with a smile" person. And now she's adding a new title: Editor of Firstline.

A big congratulations to Portia. And one to all of you, too. You're getting a great partner—an expert communicator who will do her best to address your challenges. So extend a warm welcome to your new "strategist for serving striving staff members." (But be warned, she may still pick a different title.)
