NAVTA opposes VPA/MLP model, backs credentialed, tech-centered career pathway

Fact checked by: Yasmeen Qahwash

The association's task force concluded that the proposed veterinary professional associate/midlevel practitioner (VPA/MLP) model lacks adequate clinical preparation and urges growth of accredited education and credentialing pathways for veterinary technicians.

The National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America’s (NAVTA’s) task force has concluded that the current veterinary professional associate/midlevel practitioner (VPA/MLP) model does not provide sufficient clinical preparation and risks undermining the collaborative, team-based model of veterinary care.

The task force, whose findings were unanimously approved by the association’s board, recommended instead a progressive, technician-centered education and career pathway that builds on existing accredited programs and specialty credentialing. The group said advancing veterinary technicians through associate, bachelor’s, and master’s programs, plus robust specialty certification, will strengthen practice sustainability and patient care.

“Credentialed veterinary technicians are essential to delivering safe, high-quality care,” said Anna Santos, LVT, MPH, task force chair and NAVTA president-elect. The association’s president, Jennifer Serling, MVEd, BVSc, AAS, CVT, RVT, VTES, FVTE, added that structured educational pathways and professional recognition are central to NAVTA’s strategic priorities for workforce development.

The association will host a profession-wide listening session on March 19, 2026, to discuss the task force’s work and next steps; registration information is available on the association’s website. The full position statement and supporting materials accompany the release.
