Mislabeled syringes recalled by Med-Vet International

Med-Vet International has voluntarily recalled a batch of mislabeled syringes. The syringes were wrongly labeled with 40 units per 1/2-ml syringe instead of 20 units per 1/2-ml syringe. This could potentially result in lower-than-prescribed doses of insulin in veterinary patients.

The recall includes 140 boxes of 1/2-ml U-40 insulin syringes with 29 ga x 1/2-inch needle and the lot number 20120610. The recalled products were manufactured in May 2012 and distributed from January 2013 to February 2014 to consumers, animal hospitals, animal shelters, farmers and veterinarians. The products can be identified by item number MV1/2CCINS-40 or 1/2CCINS-40 by Oasis.

Veterinarians and consumers who have these insulin syringes should quarantine all products subject to the recall. Med-Vet and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is requesting that if the products have been further distributed, customers be identified and notified as soon as possible. Med-Vet International is notifying its distributors and customers by e-mail and recall letter and is arranging for return of all recalled 1/2-ml U-40 insulin syringes.
