Ky. Lawmakers want food-animal medicine to be tax exempt

Frankfort, Ky. — A bill introduced in the Kentucky House of Representatives Jan. 7 could make many food-animal medicines tax exempt.

The proposal, HB 212, would provide a sales and use tax exemption for any prescription and over-the-counter drugs used in the diagnosis, cure, treatment or prevention of disease for many food animals, including beef and dairy cattle, sheep, swine and poultry.

The animals receiving the medications must be used for human consumption, according to the legislation.
