One of our clients works at a human hospital. Years ago she starting giving us used hospital bed pads that were clean but would be discarded by the hospital staff because they are not allowed to reuse them. These pads are absorbent on one side and waterproof on the other and are excellent as surgery or kennel pads.
Even if you don't have a connection like we do, it is worth it to talk to administrators at your local hospital to see if they will give you their used-but-clean bed pads—it never hurts to ask.
