What is it in a rottweiler's DNA, development, or environment that holds the secret to cancer-free living and longevity? Doctors want to know. P&G Pet Care, the maker of Eukanuba and Iams pet food, has partnered with the Murphy Cancer Foundation to study the environmental and genetic characteristics of rottweilers, which often live to 13 years old—the equivalent of 100 for humans—and are surprisingly more cancer resistant than other breeds. The foundation's David J. Waters, PhD, has cataloged more than 125 dogs using owner questionnaires and biological samples. Waters hopes the work will reveal factors that could teach human medicine a thing or two.
