The act, which originated as HB 7049, awaits the governor's signature and forces practitioners of human and veterinary medicine to obtain permits in order to prescribe drugs. It reflects state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) concerns regarding drug diversion, which is not a big issue among veterinary practices, says Phil Hinkle, Florida Veterinary Medical Association (FVMA) executive director.
The final bill reflects a compromise between health care professions and DEP officials who originally called for each practitioner to hold a permit in order to prescribe drugs. Permit costs, not outlined at press time, are not expected to exceed $200, officials say.
