Leona Helmsley, the billionaire hotel and real estate mogul who served prison time for tax evasion and other crimes, recently left $50 million to loved ones—$12 million of which went to her 8-year-old Maltese, Trouble. That's significantly more than what many of Helmsley's children and grandchildren received. How the multimillion-dollar canine trust will be managed isn't clear, but Helmsley wanted Trouble to live with her brother Alvin Rosenthal.
Rosenthal should watch his fingers, though. Trouble has a habit of biting, according to reports, and has nipped Helmsley's housekeepers and even strangers on the street. Trouble's nibbles led to at least one lawsuit by an angry employee, who said she suffered permanent nerve damage in her hands from dealing with Helmsley's treasured companion.
No word on what happens to Trouble's fortune when the dog dies, but authorities say it's against the law to bury Trouble next to Helmsley, as her will demands.
