This is a viable treatment plan. It is important to consider a patient's age since there is the possibility of an occult neoplastic process. Abdominal ultrasonography is a noninvasive diagnostic test, so it would not be inappropriate, if finances allow, to recommend this test right off the bat. It is important, however, for the owner to understand that we may need to act on whatever information we find (i.e. we may need to pursue a liver biopsy).
