Meritorious Service Award and Veterinarian of the Year winners recognized
The Association of Shelter Veterinarians (ASV), the professional organization for veterinarians working in all facets of animal sheltering, has awarded 2 members who have furthered ASV’s mission. Jeanette O’Quin, DVM, MPH, DACVPM, DABVP, has received the 2023 Meritorious Service Award while Tony Malone, DVM, has received the 2023 Veterinarian of the Year.
2023 ASV Meritorious Service Award– Jeanette O’Quin, DVM, MPH, DACVPM, DABVP
According to an association release,1 O’Quin was selected for her stand-out contributions to veterinary medicine and commitment to veterinary students and shelter animals. Prior to serving at The Ohio State College of Veterinary Medicine, she worked for the Ohio Department of Health Zoonotic Disease Program. Her work consists of international efforts to reduce rabies in animals and people and improve the health and welfare of companion animals and the communities that care for them. A founding member of the ASV, O’Quin most recently was as an editor for the 2022 revision of the ASV Guidelines, an rigorous, 3-year project. She has helped form the field of shelter medicine with her grassroots efforts along with many academic and outreach achievements.
The Association of Shelter Veterinarians Meritorious Service Award was created in 2010 to honor remarkable members of ASV who have made sustained contributions to accelerating shelter veterinary medicine through leadership, public service, research, education, advocacy, and/or clinical practice.
2023 ASV Veterinarian of the Year Award – Tony Malone, DVM
According to the release,1 over the last 23 years, Malone has displayed a steadfast dedication to the veterinary community and to homeless, abused and neglected pets in Texas. He’s been dedicated to shelter medicine for over 13 years. As medical director at the Houston Humane Society, Malone has enhanced clinic programs and raised community awareness of vaccination and prevention medicine. Working in one of the highest need areas in the country, Malone has helped achieve a 90% live release rate for the first time ever at 2 large animal shelters. He has trained and mentored over 720 veterinary professionals in shelter medicine and high-quality, high-volume spay and neuter surgery, to help advance the future of veterinary medicine.
The Veterinarian of the Year Award was created in 2018 to celebrate outstanding members of the ASV in their role as a veterinarian to improve community animal health and wellbeing.
