One day after the federal indictment of Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick on dog-fighting charges, the American Humane Association (AHA) urged the National Football League to make a strong statement against animal fighting.

"The NFL is in the position to help its players and staff recognize the severity of this blood sport and send a message...that such participation, in any form, will not be accepted or endorsed, AHA President and CEO Marie Belew Wheatley says in a formal statement.

She also sent NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell a letter offering free informational seminars on the topic. There was no immediate response from the NFL.

At press time, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) was meeting to discuss the issue and whether to make a public statement.
