: The “Days of Our Nine Lives: Kitties in Crisis” is one of my favorite presentations. I am definitely a cat lover, and being in emergency and critical care, I love taking care of cats in emergency setting.

In this presentation, we're really going to talk about not only recognizing emergencies in cats [and] how we treat them initially for those emergencies, but looking at presenting to the emergency hospital from the cat's point of view, and how we can help them have a better experience and we can ultimately treat them. If they get fearful and upset and we don't help with some of those behavior issues, it's very hard to treat them for an emergency.

Earlier this fall, Christopher Pachel, DVM, DACVB, CABC, sat down with 

 to talk about his lecture “Puppy Parenting: Fundamentals for Busy Practitioners” that he presented at the Fetch dvm360 conference in Atlantic City, New Jersey. In the interview, Pachel talked about some of the things that should be discussed with the puppy owner during the puppy’s first appointment.

So there's a lot that we need to cover within that appointment. And of course, when we're thinking about the behavioral aspects of puppy parenting, we're talking about things like puppy socialization and exposing them to an ever-expanding world view, while we're also trying to work through potty training and dealing with the very normal mouthing and biting issues that puppies naturally do, but we're also trying to balance that with everything else that we have to cover with vaccine series and overall health issues, and all of that information has to be balanced. So, how do we do that in a way that actually is heard by our clients without being overwhelming, and making sure that we're arming them with some of the resources for them to review after the appointment, as well as what we cover within that session?

, Andrea Pace, CVT, VTS (ECC), training mentor for the emergency department at Mount Laurel Animal Hospital in New Jersey, talked about dystocia, and when and why it can be critical to operate. She covered unexpected circumstances, like an unknown past injury that could impede the mother's labor, and why it's important to remain aware of these possibilities. 

In addition to dystocia, Pace discussed emergency surgery tips for technicians, specifically when faced with 

, in her session, "Emergency Surgeries: What a Vet Tech Needs to Know from the ER to the OR," at the recent Fetch 

 Conference in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

 Sometimes we'll have [a] mom just getting very sick...and not being able to really continue with the labor process naturally. So, it can be a ton of different problems. Sometimes it's something that you're not even expecting, like, maybe there's some history of trauma, and she broke her pelvis 5 years ago, and now is trying to give birth and can't get the baby past whatever injury she may have had. 

So, any time that this labor is really prolonged, the babies start to get distressed, and once the babies get distressed, it really limits their ability to survive. So getting the babies out of mom and getting mom into surgery in a timely manner is really essential. Hopefully most people have had some prenatal care for their dogs. Mostly it's dogs, sometimes it is cats, but hopefully some prenatal care will give them that education to know what to look for and when to worry.

Puppy Parenting: Fundamentals for Busy Practitioners

. In this preview of his lecture, Pachel emphasized the importance of proactive socialization for puppies.

Pachel will be presenting 6 other lectures on October 14. Topics will span canine noise phobia, behavioral euthanasia, neurologic vs behavioral conditions, therapeutic interventions for stress conditions in cats, and more.

So I will say that one of my favorite sessions that I get the opportunity to present, actually this one's going to be at Fetch Coastal, is the

 roadmap, and actually looking at some of the proactive socialization strategies that we have, not only understanding sort of the implications of what happens when we don't provide adequate socialization, or we're little off the mark in terms of how we do that, but really trying to make it really practical and approachable for pet owners, so it's something that they can do and understand, knowing that when they bring in new puppies into their household, there's a lot of work that goes into raising those puppies into well-mannered adult dogs, and so really trying to equip our pet parents with as many of those skills in practical, tangible ways as possible. That's what we're going to be talking about with the puppy parenting session. And I think that one looks like it's on Monday the 14th of October at Fetch Coastal in Atlantic City.
