Merial introduces UlcerGard, the only non-prescription, Food and Drug Administration-approved product given to prevent stomach ulcers in horses. Ulcergard prevents the onset of Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS), the company says. The main ingredient is omeprazole, administered at 1 mg/kg per day for 28 days during the time of stressful activities. The drug suppresses stomach acid production and has been shown to effectively prevent ulcers, the company says.
