In a way, veterinarians are like dentists. You preach to clients the importance of high-quality dental care at home, and you’re likely presented with unenthusiastic head-nodding and a promise to do better. But if recent statistics are any indication, your attempts to educate clients about healthy teeth are falling short. Dental conditions are among the most common diagnoses among pets. On a similar note, how often do you preach the importance of exercise and a healthy diet for your patients? Weight problems are a common concern among dogs and cats past the juvenile stage.
The Banfield Applied Research and Knowledge (BARK) Team recently analyzed data from more than 1.7 million dogs and more than 375,000 cats, separated by age group based on the pets’ first visit date in 2009. Unfortunately, many of the most common diagnoses are problems clients have some degree of control over—like fleas and dental ailments. Perhaps clients are ignoring your recommendations—or maybe they’re just not taking them seriously enough.
