Three recent recalls affect IV fluids, dog food, and feline milk replacers

The animal health industry has seen several recalls in recent weeks, including a UK dog food recall involving reports of sudden vision loss and a nationwide recall of Adequan injections for dogs and horses after glass fibers were detected.

Now, 3 more recalls are affecting products used in veterinary practice and pet households.

B. Braun recalls lactated Ringer's injection over particulate contamination

On August 19, the FDA posted a recall of a single lot of B. Braun’s Excel Lactated Ringer’s Injection, 1000 mL, after particulate matter was identified in the solution.

The affected lot, J4H077, has an expiration date of November 30, 2026. Testing identified cellulose cotton fibers, as well as individual particles of cellulose wood fiber and polystyrene.

Although the product is labeled for human use, the FDA flagged the recall for veterinary attention because lactated Ringer’s solution is commonly used in veterinary fluid therapy. The solution can be administered intravenously or subcutaneously to replace fluid losses and treat dehydration in companion-animal, equine, and food-animal practice.

According to the FDA, administration of the affected product could result in pulmonary emboli, blood-vessel occlusion, tissue and organ damage, phlebitis, systemic immune activation, organ dysfunction, and hemolysis.

Veterinary practices and hospitals should check their inventory for lot J4H077 and quarantine any matching units. No adverse events associated with the lot had been reported as of the recall date.

Fromm recalls 2 wet dog foods over metal contamination

On August 21, the FDA posted a recall of 2 Fromm wet dog foods after the company received complaints of metal contamination.

The recall covers 3852 cases of Fromm Turkey Pâté Wet Dog Food and 1,973 cases of Fromm Diner Classics Milo’s Meatloaf Pâté. The affected Turkey Pâté carries UPC 072705118700 and lot EP2A3306 551006, while the Milo’s Meatloaf Pâté carries UPC 072705132324 and lot EP2A3306 551029. Both have a best-by date of March 20, 2029.

The products were distributed through neighborhood pet stores and online retailers in the United States and Canada.

Fromm said ingesting metal may cause choking, vomiting, loss of appetite, lethargy, or stomach discomfort. Potential complications also include mouth and gastrointestinal tract lacerations, partial blockage, and intestinal obstruction.

No illnesses or injuries had been reported as of the recall date.

Revival recalls feline milk replacers over nutrient inconsistencies

On August 26, Revival Animal Health announced a recall of several Breeder’s Edge and Shelter’s Choice feline milk replacer products over third-party manufacturing inconsistencies that resulted in low levels of potassium, copper, folic acid, choline, and/or vitamin B6.

The recalled products were sold nationwide and include 6 UPCs: 817160011032, 817160011049, 817160011063, 817160010196, 817160011278, and 817160010103.

Revival said the recall followed third-party testing that suggested a possible nutrient deficiency in one lot, followed by the company’s own testing of multiple lots. The company has received 9 complaints involving potential gastrointestinal and bone-development issues, although no illnesses resulting from the products have been confirmed.

Consumers should stop feeding affected products and contact Revival for a refund.
