Steer runs loose through University of Missouri east campus
Man seriously injured as animal eludes owner, veterinary school staff.
University of Missouri-Columbia College of Veterinary Medicine staff and university police worked to contain a steer, owned by Duane Brune of New Haven, Mo., that got loose from the veterinary school area at 8:26 a.m. on Tuesday, June 19, according to a release from the University of Missouri-Columbia Police Department.
The steer eluded staff and officers and went north through campus, later heading to the east campus area where officers lost sight of the animal. A short time later the steer was seen heading back toward campus where officers, staff, the steer’s owner and others tried to contain it, unsuccessfully using a tranquilizer gun.
During the containment efforts, John Brune was run over by the steer as it headed north toward downtown Columbia before returning to the east campus area. Officers shot the steer behind a residence on Anthony Street around 9:49 a.m. No one else was hurt during the incident.
Brune was admitted to University Hospital in Columbia, Mo., in serious condition. Veterinary staff removed the steer from the back of the residence by loading it in a trailer. To watch video of the steer’s tour of Columbia, go to dvm360.com/loosesteer.
