Raw chicken dog food voluntarily recalled over Salmonella risk

Fact checked by: Yasmeen Qahwash

Further testing and evaluation are underway, according to Albright’s Raw Pet Food.

Albright’s Raw Pet Food has issued a voluntary recall of one lot of its Chicken Recipe for Dogs Complete and Balanced due to potential Salmonella contamination, according to a company announcement posted by the FDA on May 7, 2026. The company announced the recall on May 6, 2026.

The recall covers a single lot of frozen 1-lb bricks packaged in clear vacuum pouches and typically distributed in 30-lb cases. The affected lot code is C001730, with a best-by date of April 28, 2027, and UPC 20855404008367.

According to the FDA notice, the product was distributed directly to consumers nationwide and to a limited number of retailers in Massachusetts, California, South Carolina, North Carolina, Wisconsin, and New York, as well as through online sales.

The recall followed routine FDA sampling in which product from the lot was tested for Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenes, and Escherichia coli. The lot tested positive for Salmonella in one composite sample, according to the company and FDA notice.1

No illnesses in pets or humans have been reported or confirmed in connection with the recalled lot as of the announcement. Third-party confirmatory testing is still pending.

Albright’s Raw Pet Food said it is proceeding with a voluntary recall while further testing and evaluation are underway. “While we continue to evaluate all available data, Albright’s Raw is proceeding with this voluntary recall to ensure the highest level of safety and transparency,” the company said.1

Salmonella can cause illness in pets that consume contaminated products and may be transmitted to humans through handling contaminated food, contact with infected animals, or exposure to contaminated surfaces, according to the FDA notice. Pets may show lethargy, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, vomiting, decreased appetite, and abdominal pain, though some may remain asymptomatic while still shedding the pathogen.

In humans, Salmonella infection may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever. Severe cases can occur, particularly in young children, older adults, and immunocompromised individuals.

Consumers are advised not to feed the affected product to pets and to discard any unused portions from the recalled lot in a way that prevents children, pets, and wildlife from accessing it.

Customers seeking a refund should submit a receipt and photographs of the product, along with purchase details, to [email protected]. Questions can also be directed to the company at [email protected] or 866-729-4738.

Albright’s Raw Pet Food stated it is continuing its investigation, including third-party laboratory testing, and that the recall is being conducted with the knowledge of the FDA.
