-- A national public health warning was issued after a Labrador Retriever brought to the United States as part of Operation Baghdad Pups was found to have rabies.
The puppy, named Crusader, was among 24 dogs and two cats entering the country in June through the rescue mission organized by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals International. The program reunites soldiers with pets they may have unofficially adopted while serving in Iraq.
It was the first case of a sick animal entering the country, out of 100 animals the group has transported.
Crusader was euthanized, but other animals in the shipment were sent to 16 states before tests revealed the Lab had rabies.
Federal and state authorities tracked down the pets and vaccinated them. The animals are being held for six months, but none so far has shown signs of illness.
