Proctor & Gamble recalls single lot of Iams dry dog food due to aflatoxin levels

— The Proctor & Gamble Company (P&G) is voluntarily recalling a single production lot of its Iams ProActive Health Smart Puppy dry dog food.

The Dec. 6 recall is attributed to aflatoxin levels that were detected above the acceptable limits, according to P&G.

The affected lots include 7-pound bags with the UPC Code 1901402305, 8-pound bags with the UPC Code 1901410208, and 17.5-pound bags with the UPC Code 1901401848. They were distributed to a limited number of retailers in the eastern United States (Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Maine, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Virginia). All the affected products has already been retrieved from store shelves, says P&G, and no illnesses have been reported in association with the recall.

Aflatoxin is a naturally occurring by-product from the growth of

Aspergillus flavus

and can be harmful to pets if consumed in significant quantities, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). FDA says pets affected by aflatoxin may exhibit symptoms of illness including sluggishness or lethargy combined with a reluctance to eat, vomiting, yellowish tint to the eyes or gums, or diarrhea and should be seen by a veterinarian.

Consumers who purchased the product are being advised discard it and contact Iams at (866) 908-1569 for a replacement voucher.
