Jade Vets – a privately owned veterinary practice group— announced that it will sponsor the $10,000 Latinx Veterinary Medical Association (Latinx VMA) Platinum Scholars Scholarship for the second year in a row.

“We are excited that Jade Vets is 'presente' once again to make an unforgettable impact on the life of a scholar and the veterinary community,” said Acacia Román, DVM, current president at Latinx VMA, in an organizational release.1 “Last year we were able to award $36,000 in scholarships thanks to special donations like this one from Jade Vets and support from other invaluable sponsors impacting the lives of 15 veterinary students of the Latinx community.”

In order to qualify for the scholarship, veterinary students must identify as Latinx or Hispanic background, including Brazil, living in the United States, Canada, or the Caribbean and enrolled in veterinary school for the 2023 fall semester. Students must also be in good academic standing with a minimum of 2.0 GPA at a school located in the United States, Canada, or enrolled in Ross, St. George’s, and St. Matthew’s universities.2

Applicants must provide a copy of their unofficial transcript or complete and submit Latinx VMA’s good standing form that must be signed by an Associate Dean for Academic or Student Affairs.

For applicants to be considered, they must also be a student member of Latinx VMA and need to submit a personal statement between 350 and 500 words maximum explaining a challenge they faced or overcame on their life and how they plan to help future generations of aspiring Latinx/Hispanic veterinarians work through the challenge they faced.

“Jade Vets is happy to support an outstanding Latinx veterinary student through their veterinary school journey and provide much needed debt relief,” expressed Julio López, DVM, DACVIM (SAIM), co-Founder and chief medical officer of Jade Vets.1 “Sponsoring this scholarship is in line with our core values of making a positive impact in our veterinary community.”

Latinx VMA was founded in February 2020 by Yvette Huizar, DVM, and Juan S. Orejuala, DVM, after they both noticed and experienced a lack of representation and resources available within veterinary medicine.3 Through Latinx VMA, a community was created for veterinarians, technicians, paraprofessionals, students, and clients to help celebrate and encourage other Latinx/Hispanic individuals that they have a home in veterinary medicine.

Applications will be accepted until Friday, September 22, 2023, at 11:59 PM EST. The winner will be announced during Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month through email and the Latinx VMA social media.2 The winner’s essay will also be posted on the Latinx VMA homepage. Interested students can visit the Latinx VMA website for more information and the application.
