Salem, Ore. — The Oregon Board of Pharmacy amended its controlled substances rules as they apply to certain euthanasia drugs.

The changes reflect revisions that were made to the Veterinary Medical Examining Board's rules relating to the registration of Certified Euthanasia Technicians.

The rules establish new training requirements for Certified Euthanasia Technicians or those who possess/administer sodium pentobarbital for euthanizing injured, sick, homeless or unwanted domestic pets and other animals. These rules also incorporate a 2011 fee increase, which was adopted in June and effective July 1, 2011.

The rules detail requirements that must be met in order for a humane society or animal-control agency to be registered to allow the purchase, possession and administration of sodium pentobarbital for euthanizing injured, sick, homeless or unwanted domestic pets and other animals. The rules apply to storage, record-keeping and drug disposal.
