Brea, Calif.-According to actuarial data, between 25 percent and 40 percent of all American household pets are overweight or obese. And this trend is leading to an increase in obesity-related pet illnesses.

The data comes from Veterinary Pet Insurance, and according to its statistics, heart-related claims have risen more than 47 percent in the past two years. Claims for other obesity related illnesses, such as diabetes and joint/back issues, have increased steadily.

Statistics show 60 percent of American adults are overweight or obese, and the Journal of Nutrition adds that obese pet owners are up to three times more likely to have overweight dogs.

Dr. Peter Weinstein, medical director of VPI and president of the California Veterinary Medical Association, says, "As we move to a more sedentary and pampered culture, so have our pets."
