A new probiotic for dogs and cats from Standard Process enters a growing market

Standard Process has introduced a probiotic supplement for dogs and cats, one of a handful of new probiotic products to enter the companion-animal market in recent months. The company announced GI Soothing on August 25.¹

The product combines the probiotic Saccharomyces boulardii, postbiotic fermentation metabolites from Lactobacillus fermentum and L. delbrueckii, and a blend of botanicals including marshmallow root, slippery elm bark and okra. Standard Process says the formula is intended to support digestive comfort, bowel function and gastrointestinal balance in animals experiencing occasional digestive upset, diarrhea, sensitive stomach or stress-related digestive distress.

According to Standard Process, GI Soothing contains 2 ingredient blends. The biotic blend pairs S. boulardii, at more than 1 billion colony-forming units per serving at the time of manufacture, with postbiotic metabolites from the 2 Lactobacillus strains. The company says the ingredients support intestinal barrier function, microbial balance, stool quality and immune signaling.¹

A second blend contains marshmallow root, slippery elm bark and okra. The company says the ingredients provide polysaccharides that swell in water to form a gel intended to coat the gastrointestinal lining during periods of irritation.¹

Unlike products that rely solely on live microorganisms, GI Soothing combines a probiotic with postbiotic fermentation metabolites. Standard Process says this approach provides support without relying solely on live microbial colonization.¹

The product is intended for dogs and cats of all ages and is available for preorder. Standard Process markets GI Soothing through participating veterinary professionals.

Digestive upset is among the most common reasons pets are brought in for veterinary care. Gastrointestinal issues were the single most common insurance claim for both dogs and cats in 2025, according to the North American Pet Health Insurance Association's 2026 State of the Industry Report.² The discomfort these episodes cause pets and the concern they raise for owners help explain the steady demand for products aimed at supporting digestive health.

“GI Soothing is formulated to support pets during such events and is intended to give veterinarians an evidence-informed, integrative option for supporting patients experiencing occasional stomach and intestinal discomfort,” Katrina Verdeur, MS, pet product development manager at Standard Process, said in a company news release announcing the launch.¹

The new supplement enters a companion-animal market that has seen multiple probiotic products introduced in recent months.

IFF introduced PureStrong on April 2, 2026, a canine probiotic built around a single strain of Limosilactobacillus reuteri sourced from the dog microbiome rather than strains developed for humans or livestock.³ In a controlled study of healthy dogs undergoing an abrupt diet change, dogs receiving PureStrong showed improved markers of digestive health and firmer stools without constipation, according to the company.³

Nestlé Purina PetCare also released the FortiFlora Diarrhea Response Kit in August 2026, a 2-step over-the-counter system pairing a kaolin-pectin binder with a probiotic containing the single strain Enterococcus lactis SF68.⁴ Nutramax Laboratories Veterinary Sciences' Proviable Diarrhea Support Kit similarly combines a kaolin-pectin paste with multi-strain probiotic capsules.
