New ways to find cats homes
Rescue groups and shelters sell potential owners on mouse-killing and feline social skills.
A new mouse patroller program finds homes for cats that will never have good people skills but can work for their room and board. It's one of two organizations in Maryland and Michigan trying new ways to make adopting cats easier.
Alley Cat Rescue, a nonprofit dedicated to the welfare of stray and feral cats, is offering feral cats that have been spayed or neutered to people who need good mousers in their barns or other outbuildings.
And in Michigan, the Friends for the Dearborn Animal Shelter rented and converted a trailer to hold feline residents of the new Community Cat Center while they wait for adoption. The trailer holds up to 15 cats, who can roam and socialize at will. A pair of friends, Mona and Sissy, had been waiting for adoption for three years in their previous digs. They were the first residents of the new center and among the first to be adopted.
