CARSON CITY, NEV. — New regulations on dog and cat breeders in Nevada include prohibiting the sale of either animal without a sales contract.

Senate Bill 299 was signed into law June 10 and takes effect Oct. 1. Under the new law, breeders may not breed a female dog before the age of 18 months or more than once a year. Any dog or cat sold must be implanted with a microchip, be up-to-date with all vaccinations appropriate for their age and be accompanied by a sales contract written to the purchaser.

"Breeder" applies to anyone who breeds cats and dogs for sale or trade, unless it's as a hobby, according to legislation. The bill also outlines requirements for housing and caring for dogs and cats in breeding operations.
