Injectable drugs recalled due to potential microbial contamination

Article

SCA Pharmaceuticals is voluntarily recalling products, mainly analgesics, that were distributed to both veterinary and human hospitals.

SCA Pharmaceuticals is conducting a voluntary recall of several of its products after a finding that the products, which are intended to be sterile, have the potential for microbial contamination, the FDA reports. The company hasn't received customer complaints or reports of adverse events to date but is still recalling the products, which were distributed nationally, out of an abundance of caution.

Below is a list of drugs affected by the recall. For full product information including indication, lot number and number of items recalled, click here.

> Succinylcholine

> Hydromorphone

> Fentanyl

> Morphine

> Oxytocin

> Phenylephrine

> Calcium gluconate

> Rocuronium.

Customers who received the recalled products are being notified via telephone, email and U.S. mail and SCA Pharmaceuticals is arranging for the return and replacement of the affected products, the FDA states in a release. Customers who are in possession of recalled product should discontinue use immediately and return it to the company at:

SCA Pharmaceuticals

8821 Knoedl Court

Little Rock, AR 72205

Consumers with questions about the recall can call SCA Pharmaceuticals at (877) 550-5059 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. CST, Monday through Friday.

Adverse reactions or quality problems associated with the use of these products should be reported to the FDA's MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program online, by mail or by fax, the release says. Visit fda.gov/medwatch/report.htm to complete the form online. For mail or fax download the form here: fda.gov/MedWatch/getforms.htm then complete and return to the address listed on the form or fax to (800) FDA-0178.
