April 11, 2023

Led by the AVMA and Mars Veterinary Health, this new guide will hopefully strengthen the relationship between pet owners and veterinary professionals to deliver high-quality pet care

Mars Veterinary Health and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) led fellow industry leaders to create the Positive Pet Care Guide. This new free resource will help strengthen the relationship between veterinary teams and their clients so they can give the best care to pets.

"Mars Veterinary Health and our family of practices are proud to collaborate with industry leaders to drive positive change across the profession so that people and pets can thrive," said Doug Drew, president of Mars Veterinary Health, in an organizational release.1 "When we strengthen the relationship between veterinary professionals and pet owners, hospital teams and clients can better work together to provide quality care to the pets that rely on us."

According to the organizational release,1 the guide was first announced in September at Banfield’s 2022 Pet Healthcare Industry Summit and leveraged direct input from veterinary professionals, industry leaders, and pet owners to ensure it addressed the concerns and needs of everyone. The guide outlines expectations from pet parents and veterinary professionals to help create healthy lines of communication and foster an environment where all interactions are safe, supportive, and inclusive.

"We are incredibly proud of the way industry leaders from across the profession came together to create a much-needed resource that we're confident will have a positive impact on hospital teams, pet owners, and patients," said Lori M. Teller, DVM, DABVP (canine/feline), CVJ, AVMA president, in the release.1 "We remain committed to ensuring veterinary professionals have the tools they need to thrive in their careers while meeting the needs of clients and pets."

  • VCA Animal Hospitals
  • American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges
  • National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America
  • Not One More Vet
  • Veterinary Hope Foundation
  • Veterinary Medical Association Executives
  • Veterinary Hospital Managers Association

The guide will be available within the AVMA’s reputation management tool kit for free, thanks to an education grant from Banfield. The resource can be printed and displayed in veterinary clinics or serve as a handout to clients as a tip sheet. It educates on behaviors and treatment veterinary professionals and clients can expect from each other to promote mutual respect and trust.
