National Pet Week—initiated in 1981 by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and Auxiliary to the AVMA to honor pets and encourage responsible pet ownership—kicked off this week on May 1, 2022, and will run through May 7, 2022. In light of the occasion, the AVMA is offering pet owners with pointers and resources to help their pets lead happy, healthy lives.

"Whether companion, comedian, confidant, or protector, our pets are always there for us, but not everyone is aware of all the things their pets need from them," said Jose Arce, DVM, president of the AVMA, in an association release.1

"That's why, in addition to celebrating the bond between us and our pets, National Pet Week encourages pet owners to be certain to provide their best friends with everything needed for a happy, healthy life."

Every day of National Pet Week highlights a unique topic key to responsible pet ownership. Here are the themes for this year1:

  • Sunday—Choose well: Commit for life
  • Monday—Socialize now: New doesn't have to be scary
  • Tuesday—Nutrition and exercise matter
  • Wednesday—Love your pet? See your vet!
  • Thursday—Travel with care
  • Friday—Emergencies happen: Be prepared
  • Saturday—Plan for their care: Give them a lifetime of love

What’s more, the AVMA is providing an official National Pet Week toolkit and videos for veterinarians to use for the special week with staff and clients. For more information, go to AVMA.org/PetWeek.
