Hawaiian law mandates new pet care standards

-- Hawaiian lawmakers outlined specific requirements for pet owners that must be met in regard to housing, nutrition and veterinary care.

Included in the bill, signed into law May 28, are definitions of what constitutes proper shelter and “necessary sustenance.” The new law also states that animals must be provided veterinary care when required to prevent suffering.

The law is part of Hawaii’s efforts to strengthen its animal cruelty laws and was developed in part by a special task force. It will take effect in January.
