HONOLULU — State lawmakers are again calling for mandatory sterilization of puppies and kittens sold through pet stores.

Hawaii's Senate Bill 2504 and Senate Bill 2494, introduced Jan. 20, would prohibit the sale of unsterilized dogs or cats. The legislation would require pet retailers to implant microchips in dogs or cats prior to sale, and it would require pet retailers to collect dog-licensing forms and fees. In addition, the legislation would ban the sale of dogs and cats in public places, unless facilitated by a humane organization.

Both bills have been referred to various legislative committees.
