California considers banning declawing cats

At least two California cities—more are rumored to be joining them—have proposed laws that would ban veterinarians from declawing cats. Legislators in San Francisco and Santa Monica are trying to pass the ordinances before Jan. 1, when a new state rule goes into effect preventing local governments from limiting the practice of a licensed profession. West Hollywood already bans declawing.

Although the battle currently is being fought in California, it likely will spread to other parts of the country. The American Veterinary Medical Association does not oppose declawing, but recommends it be done only after the client is fully educated on the topic. The California Veterinary Medical Association has expressed concern about municipalities passing laws that are allowed under the scope of practice for a state-licensed health profession.
