Schering-Plough introduces Aquaflo® Type A Medicated Article (florfenicol), an antimicrobial for the control of mortality due to septicemia of catfish, a bacterial disease that results in significant economic loss to the catfish industry.

Aquaflor was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), making the product the first new antimicrobial approved for finfish in more than 20 years.

The product is the second approved Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) drug — meaning the feed can be given only under the order of a licensed veterinarian.

The FDA has concluded that catfish fed florfenicol are safe for human consumption when the fish are treated according to the label.
